Frequently asked

What is a brownout in Cebu?

In the Philippines a brownout means the power is out — the word is used for any interruption, planned or not. In Cebu most of them fall into three kinds: scheduled maintenance, which the utility announces days ahead so it can work on lines and equipment safely; rotational interruptions, which are shared out across areas when there is not enough supply to meet demand; and emergency outages caused by faults, accidents or weather.

What is VECO?

VECO is the Visayan Electric Company, the utility that distributes electricity across Metro Cebu. It has since rebranded to simply Visayan Electric, but VECO is still the name most Cebuanos use, and a “VECO brownout” and a “Cebu brownout” usually mean the same thing. Every schedule on this page comes from that company's own advisories.

Why is there a VECO brownout in my area today?

Most interruptions listed here are planned maintenance: VECO de-energises a section of line to repair, replace or upgrade equipment, and publishes the affected barangays and the time window in advance. If your barangay appears with a rotational slot instead, that is a supply shortfall being shared across the grid rather than work on your line. Unannounced outages are usually faults — a downed line, a damaged pole, or a problem further up the network — and those will not appear on a schedule at all.

How long does a VECO brownout usually last?

Every advisory publishes its own start and end time, and that exact window is what this page shows for your barangay, along with the total duration. Scheduled maintenance is normally a single block of several hours during daylight. Power is often restored before the published end time, because the window is the longest the crew expects to need rather than a promise to use all of it.

What is the difference between a brownout and a blackout?

In everyday Philippine use the two mean the same thing: no electricity. Strictly speaking a brownout is a drop in voltage that dims lights and strains appliances, while a blackout is a complete loss of power. Utilities and news reports in Cebu use brownout for both, and so does this site.

How do I check the VECO brownout schedule for my barangay?

Type your barangay into the search box at the top of this page and pick it from the list. You will get its current status and every interruption on record for it — the date, the time window, how long it runs, and the reason given. Searching by city name instead lists every barangay in it, so you can scan a whole area at once.

Which areas does this cover?

This covers Visayan Electric's distribution area in Cebu: Cebu City, Mandaue City, Lapu-Lapu City, Talisay City, Naga City, Carcar City, Consolacion, Minglanilla, San Fernando, Compostela, Cordova and Liloan. Areas served by other electric cooperatives elsewhere in Cebu province are not included.

Where does this schedule come from?

Every interruption on this page comes from Visayan Electric's (VECO's) own published advisories and its service interruption calendar. Nothing here is estimated or predicted. The calendar is re-read automatically every two hours through the day and the advisories twice daily, so the timestamp at the top of the page tells you exactly how fresh the data is. For anything urgent, or to report an outage that is not listed, contact Visayan Electric directly.
